Can anyone tell me what, exactly, is a "clod" of ground ginger? And what other than, of course, a "dash" of Mrs. Dash? Brilliant.

Only a mother, specifically yours, would know what a clod is. Ground ginger tends to clump. Nine-year-olds are way more familiar with clods than clumps.
